I was 19 and broken to put it mildly, I made a good mess of things, made horrible choices, and I was mentally and spiritually lost. Despite seeing the mess I made, I didn’t see a way out or a way to change. The day that I gave my life to Jesus I didn’t know was the day my life would change, I didn’t know I would encounter him the way I did.
In John 4: 1-26 the Samaritan woman was living everyday in her own mess and brokenness, she would even go out to the well in the middle of the day to avoid the other women who were there to fetch water. When she came to the well she didn’t know the man that was there, much less that he was Jesus. To Jesus it didn’t matter that she was samaritan and to Jesus her sin didn’t keep him from sharing the words with her that would completely change her life. Jesus saw her, he saw her value, her potential, her future. To many times we fail to see ourselves as God does. We fail to see our full potential, but God looks at us with a full view, he sees the masterpiece in the broken pieces.
After the life changing moments at the well, she didn’t leave there unchanged…no way a woman whose life had been changed by an incredible encounter with Jesus, she went to tell everyone and John 4:39 tells us “many of the Samaritans from that town believed in him because of the woman’s testimony.” Many of us can relate to her story, maybe the well we met Jesus at was a church altar, at home in our bedrooms, a church camp, wherever the well was where you encountered Jesus – one fact remains when you walked away, your life was completely changed.
