Bible Reading: Luke 1:46-55
Humility is not a quality that is glorified in our culture. Humility to most looks like weakness. It is a quality that our world could use more of…we could use more Mary’s.
Mary’s wasn’t boastful because God had chosen her for this job…just the opposite. She wondered why on earth He would choose her…she praised Him, she was grateful that He set her apart. Humility is defined as “a modest or low view of one’s importance.” When you are truly humble you are free from pride and arrogance. We realize in the grand scheme God’s will is more important that our own interests and people will always be more important than our own selfishness.
Just like any girl I am sure Mary had dreams for her life, she imagined what her family would be like, where they would live…but when the angel appeared to her, those dreams where flipped upside down. Mary was humbled and willing to set aside the ideas she had for her own life to accomplish the will of God.
How many times in our own life have we pushed God’s will aside because it wasn’t exactly what we wanted or it didn’t fit into our dream. I have a story about how God did that in my own life…but that’s a story for another day.
In this Advent season let’s seek to be like Mary, humble our hearts and serve God first above all else.
Take some time to unplug this afternoon, watch a Christmas movie as a family…no interruptions allowed!
