Bible Reading: Isaiah 9:6-7
Devotion (Guest writer: Tanya Cowley)
Did you ever receive a gift so fantastic you couldn’t believe it was actually for you? Did you check the name on the tag to make sure you didn’t open a package meant for someone else? Did you stand there full of awe and disbelief, overcome by inexpressible gratitude?
That is the way I feel when I think about the gift God gave us in His Son, Jesus Christ. I am overwhelmed by His incomprehensible love and crippled by the magnitude of His generosity, especially in light of how little I have to offer in return.
But then I return to these verses in Isaiah and reread the gift tag.
I read about the gift given unto us, the children of God, from the Lord of Hosts. Not because of anything we have done. He gave it out of zeal, or a fervent desire. And unlike the treasures of this earth, it is a gift that will never whither away.
To those trapped in the ordinary and mundane looking for meaning and something more, He gave you something Wonderful.
To the lost, confused, or unsure what to do He gave you a Counsellor.
To the weak, abused, neglected, or humiliated He gave you a mighty God.
To the orphaned, abandoned, and discarded He gave you an everlasting Father.
To the warring, turmoiled, and conflicted He gave you the Prince of Peace.
With this gift comes wholeness, righteousness, and justice that will not end.
Check the tag, friend. Your name is on it. Unwrap the favor of the Lord Almighty. You will find the everlasting gift of exactly what you need.
