Have you met Matthew?
A tax collector, probably extremely disliked because of the profession that he had. Often tax collectors of the day were liars, greedy, and lining their own pockets. We don’t know much about Matthew’s past other than his occupation. He got up one morning as he usually does, went to his tax collecting booth not knowing that he was about to have an encounter that would change his life.
“As Jesus went on from there, he saw a man named Matthew sitting at the tax collector’s booth. “Follow me” he told him, and Matthew got up and followed him.” Matthew 9:9
Matthew didn’t hesitate to respond when Jesus said to follow him. As a tax collector walking away from his post and job meant unemployment, he could not return to the same life once he chose to follow Jesus. That didn’t matter to Matthew, what mattered was his response. Matthew didn’t know the future of what choosing to follow Jesus looked like, just like you and I don’t know the future when we say yes to following Jesus. Matthew didn’t know that he would pen one of the most detailed of the four gospels, he did not know that he would see the incredible ministry of Jesus with his own eyes. God made no mistake with Matthew, just like he makes no mistake with us. He equips us just as he did Matthew for the exact tasks he has planned for us. “Much of what God has for us he gives long before we are able to consciously respond to him. He trusts us with skills and abilities ahead of schedule. He has made us each capable of being his servant.” (Life Application Study Bible)
In our own lives when we say yes to following Jesus we won’t know what the future holds but we can know for certain he has already prepared us for it.
