Ah, can you hear it? The epically loud noise of summer time. School is out (or almost out), the weather is hot, and I am pretty sure someone’s kid has already thrown out the dreaded words, “Mom, I’m bored.”
I know our family has already made their first trip to the library to load up on books for the long months ahead. I haven’t always enjoyed summer reading, but over the years it has grown on me. The stacks of books everywhere, the wonder, the tales that are unraveling with every page. I love the books that teach us something, which sends us on a hunt with excitement for new things. (A fun fact about me/sidenote is I love collecting seashells. I can look for hours on the beach, and I have hoarded tubs of them in our garage. Well, we grabbed a shell book at the library and plan to do some research on what we have in the garage. Hello, have rainy day activity.)
We over complicate summer, and by we, I mean I over complicate summer. Maybe you and I are in the same boat. I had made one of those cute summer bucket lists only to find by the time they were headed back to school I was ready to burn it for lack of completion. I played like a pawn into the pressure (thanks Pinterest).
Dear Mom, let’s not complicate things. Let’s do things differently.
I believe summer reading may save your sanity, and here is why. In a culture driven by electronics, we have lost touch with the power of a book. We have lost touch with imagination and play. I have committed our family to no TV or electronics until after dinner. It will take more work on my part but that’s my job as mama right? We are going to unplug to find the beauty around us, we will chase fireflies, lay in the grass and read books, we will read together, and we will explore. Just like we did as kids before the internet ruled all.
Let’s choose better, I know I am ready. Are you with me?
You don’t have to do things the same way but let’s help our kids find the magic in reading this summer. Your local library, Lifeway, and many other bookstores have reading programs for your kids with prizes as an incentive!
Guess what, summer reading isn’t just for them, it is for us too. They are not the only ones who need to find the wonder again, who need to read words that breathe life into us. Plus, when your kids see you reading it sends a message. What we do sends a message to our families about what is important. So this summer let’s unplug and open a book. Let’s choose beauty over screens, I personally can’t wait to try this adventure with my family.
Here are some of the books I am reading this summer if you want to join me!
Word Filled Women’s Ministry by Gloria Furman
Lineage of Grace by Francine Rivers (Fiction)
In His Image by Jen Wilkin
Believing God by Beth Moore

These are a few books on my list, and it may end up as more or less. Share in the comments what you are reading this summer! I can’t wait to see what you are reading!
